The game is on!

The internet advertising industry has been experiencing a rapid growth over the past few years. Even though the advantages of online advertising has been thoroughly proven with its scales of measurement and tracking response, many companies are still very reluctant to invest online. What is it about TV commercializing that makes the companies so confident and reliant on a medium that is pure monologue with the viewer? The marketers themselves probably change channels whenever an advertisement interrupts their favourite show when they get back home from work. It has already been proven that people are tending to spend more time online then watching TV. So what is it that makes companies prefer TV advertising?

The answer is simple. Video!

Unlike text, audio or animation, video has the ability to really absorb the user’s concentration when viewing it. So even though you are only reaching out to those who don’t switch channel or put the TV on mute when commercials are on, you are still reaching a big audience that would probably (if the TV ad is good enough) go around telling people. Video has the power to move people’s emotions, and that’s what advertising is about. Reach is not an advantage for TV, because it’s not targeted, and you don’t know who you’re actually reaching. However, let’s get down to the point about what the internet industry is doing to make it a fair fight…

When Google is doing good, online advertising is doing great

Google’s new mission this year is to venture into video advertising. That comes as no surprise when you consider that YouTube belongs to them! The video sharing website has been a revolutionary force of information worldwide. Many times it has found itself in trouble with governments that find explicit contact up there (China, Thaliand, US, to say the least). YouTube has truly given power to the people, and they love it, because it’s video! The best part is that the user watches what they want and when they want with no interruption. Google has been extremely brave to figure out a way in which they could use this massive video content as a medium for online advertising without following the footsteps of TV. Exposing a brand, yet keeping the control in the hands of the user. How did they do this? by partnering up with the largest video content suppliers on the web and launching a contextual advertising program in videos, in a way that does not disturb the viewer, producing a new ad format for videos, which they are in the trial stage for.

The Internet can finally speak the TV’s language!

This is not only going to cause the video advertising to grow, it's going to cause a shift of the advertising budget that companies allocate for TV. Contextual ads will move to another level, where the advertisers pay extra to have their ads on videos, with Rich media formats, texts, and TV commercials, that are only viewed based on user initiative. Google is trying to keep control of the video advertising market, but its main competitor MSN is trying to come up with a similar concept to keep up with the pace of Google.

With a lot of advertising money expected to flow into the internet market for videos, the industry will have money to grow and websites will be aggressively competing with each other, hence coming up with new technologies to make the internet more efficient with constant supply of new "cool" stuff that meet to all our demands.

When governments see the growth of the industry, they will realize a lot of money can be made. Some countries may be wise enough to support the industry's growth, while some other countries may find it as a new medium for them to control. But they will never be able to come up with technology that keeps pace with the technology of 'the rest of the world'. The internet is about to give power to the people of the world combined.
