The internet has given us a fast and effective way to communicate, which is used to its fullest extent today. We (people) have taken the internet and evolved with to a world-wide communication tool, platform for interaction and exchange of data. Today the internet isn't just for sending and receiving electronic mail. People have gone beyond that, the emergence of Web 2.0 and user generated content in the form of uploading, downloading, sharing, and networking. Online social networks are in the heart of this online technological era.
The purpose of online social networking websites was to take interaction among people to another level. Social networks, I think, more than anything give people a place to belong and to ‘hang out’ with each other online. To have a clearer picture of the role of social networking in our evolvement with the internet, and to understand the industry , it is useful to have a quick run through the history of this breed of websites, and what it has developed into today.
Brief history of social networking
Early social networking began in 1995 with websites such as Classmates.com, which focused on direct ties with former school mates, and went on to increase ties between college/ university students, people who attended a military base and workplace.
In 1997, SixDegrees.com was launched. This website's concept was that ‘you’ know everybody in the world, either as a one-degree (direct) friend, two-degree, all the way to SixDegrees. This website was focusing on indirect ties, thus increasing interaction between a user and his friend's friend's friend, for example.
In 1999, two different models of social networking emerged; trust-based (such as epinions.com) and friendship based. These types of websites weren't only focusing on showing who is a friend with whom, but also giving the user control over his/her page in terms of content and who you want to connect with.
By 2005, MySpace was reportedly getting more page views than Google. Today, Facebook is a major competitor that is rapidly growing in size (150,000 new users a day). In 2007, Facebook began allowing externally-developed add-on applications, and some applications enabled the graphing of a user's own social network - thus linking social networks and social networking.
The impact of social networks today is highly evident with the amount of social networks (general and niche) that are online. Even John Edwards (candidate for 2008 American presidency) has signed up for 23 social networks to boost his presidential campaign.
Business Applications:
Social networking began to flourish as a component of business internet strategy at around March 2005 when Yahoo launched Yahoo! 360°. In July 2005 News Corporation bought MySpace, followed by ITV (UK) buying Friends Reunited in December 2005. It is estimated that combined there are now over 200 social networking sites using these existing and emerging social networking models.
Social networks connect people at low cost; this can be beneficial for entrepreneurs and small businesses looking to expand their contact base. These networks often act as a customer relationship management tool for companies selling products and services. Companies can also use social networks for advertising in the form of banners and text ads. Since businesses operate globally, social networks can make it easier to keep in touch with contacts around the world. In many ways business networking on social networks has eclipsed the amount of networking that takes place on dedicated business networking websites.
Business Models
Currently, almost no social networks charge money for membership. It is believed though, that in the future this might change as the users begin to realize the value of using these websites. Companies like MySpace and Facebook sell online advertising on their site. The deeper information that the sites have on each user will allow much better targeted advertising than any other site can currently provide. Sites are also seeking other ways to make money, such as by creating an online marketplace (Facebook's Marketplace) or by selling professional information and social connections to businesses: such as LinkedIn.
Mobile phones/ devices and Social Networking
In addition to internet-based social networking, cell phone manufacturers are getting into the social networking business with phones that allow users to create lists of friends and associates, track their movements even across countries, and create customized maps and alerts that signal the user when a desired person is within a predetermined range. With such GPS-enabled phones, users are able to send out invitations or messages to groups of people based on customized attributes, including location. However, I doubt that this market will grow much, because I believe that privacy has its limits and not many users would want to be tracked down by their friends. Facebook now has a feature where users can perform various tasks through their mobile once they register. However, I believe only people that are "addicted" to Facebook would actually do that. If you ask me, I think it's horrendous.
Social networks worthy of mention:
Revver.com is a social networking website that allows you to upload videos like YouTube. The only BIG difference is that Revver shares its revenue from the videos with the content providers, meaning that the advertising revenue that is resulted from those videos is shared with the user. Another website "Metacafe.com" actually has a Producer Award, where it rewards the person with the best original video uploaded.
Flickr is the biggest photo sharing community in the world and has amazing features that allow you to share and upload pictures. Want to know how amazing? Go to the website and click on "free tour".
43things is a website where the user creates a list of goals that he wishes to achieve in his life (short term or long term) which are analyzed and connected with other users that have similar words or ideas.
